5 Easy Ways to Donate Your Stuff
It’s officially fall! That means it’s time for cute layers, sweet treats, and cozy nights in — and it’s also time to rotate your closet. Need to make room for your favorite seasonal clothes, shoes and accessories? Try donating!
That goes for outgrown toys, outdated electronics, and other around-the-house items, too. Here are a few tips to help you rethink the throw-away pile in your closet:
Host a Swap Party with Friends
You’ve heard of shopping your closet, so why not shop your friends’ stuff, too? Chances are, they have great taste and may be tired of something that you’d love to have. Just put on some music, set out some snacks, and invite your friends to come by with things they’d like to trade.
Ask Your Neighbors
Free, community-based websites such as Nextdoor and Freecycle can put you directly in touch with your neighbors. Just create your free account and post the items that you have to give away. Often, these sites are also a great way to trade for items that you’d consider purchasing.
Donate to a Local Charity
Shelters, after-school programs, and even pet clinics are in need of textiles to keep guests comfortable. Consider passing on gently used business clothes and children’s outfits to a women’s shelter; and don’t forget that clean sheets and oversized t-shirts can be used for many after-school art and activity programs. If you have old towels or bed spreads, wash them and donate them to an animal shelter where workers will use them at bath time and bedtime.
Donate to a Global Organization
Flagship organizations such as Goodwill and The Salvation Army operate donation centers in thousands of cities. Wash your gently used clothes, pair up wearable shoes, and check the wiring on housewares then simply drop them off at the location nearest you.
Make an Appointment for Home Pick-Up
Don’t have a donation center near you? Just visit the Pick Up My Donation website and enter your zip code. Based on your location, you’ll be able to fill out a list of what you want picked up — from tools and recreational vehicles to big furniture, appliances, and clothing, too.
Cleaning out your old stuff doesn’t have to be a boring chore. Remember, what’s old to you is new to someone else. And, you help us, too — Global Clothing Industries LLC purchases those donations from wholesalers, which reduces landfill waste and provides job opportunities for people around the world. So take a few minutes to pass on some items. You never know what you’ll find next!
