GCI Response to 2023 Earthquake in Turkey & Syria
On February 6, 2023, a catastrophic earthquake shook Turkey & Syria. The quake and its aftershocks, including a major one nine hours after the initial earthquake, has killed more than 35,000 people. Entire towns and cities inhabited by millions have been reduced to fragments of concrete and twisted metal. The harsh climate has made recovery operations especially difficult, as thousands have lost everything and must suffer through very cold weather.
Upon hearing the terrible news, Global Clothing Industries moved quickly to find a way to help the people going through this natural disaster. In coordination with the Turkish consulate, GCI was able to donate a full container of nearly 44,000 pounds of clothing for men, women, & children. The container departed on February 9.
“To whom much is given, much is expected.” says Global Clothing Industries CEO, Lamin Bah. From creating job opportunities for people in developing countries through the import/export of used clothing, to developing schools, mentorship programs, and medical mission trips through the Lamin & Kadie Bah Foundation, giving back is in GCI’s DNA. Our prayers go out to those suffering from the earthquake.
